Step 1

Start by placing the salmon fillets in a bowl. In another bowl, mix together the soy sauce, lemon juice, half of the chopped onion, the onion slices, chopped garlic, and a bit of black pepper. Pour this marinade over the salmon, then add the remaining chopped onion, minced garlic, and some garlic-pepper seasoning on top. Cover the bowl and pop it in the fridge to marinate for 12 to 15 hours, flipping the fish halfway through so both sides soak up the flavors.

Step 2

When you’re ready to cook, fire up your grill to high heat and give the grate a quick oiling to prevent sticking. Lay the salmon directly on the grill or on cedar planks if you have them, and pile the marinated onion slices over the top. Let the salmon cook until it’s nicely browned, about 8 to 10 minutes, then turn the heat down to medium-low and cook a little longer—3 to 5 minutes—until the fish flakes easily with a fork. Enjoy!

03 / EXTRA DETAILS

Good to know.

Cook's tip

- Use fresh garlic and lemon for the best flavor.
- Don’t overcook the fish; salmon is best when it flakes easily but is still moist inside.
- Let the salmon rest for a few minutes after cooking to allow the juices to redistribute.

Why you’ll love it

This dish combines bright citrus flavors with the rich, buttery taste of salmon. It’s both healthy and satisfying, making it perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or a special occasion. The garlic adds a nice depth without overpowering the fish.

Serving ideas

Serve with a side of steamed vegetables or a light salad to complement the fresh flavors. Roasted potatoes or quinoa also pair well and help make the meal more filling.

Storage & leftovers

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave to avoid drying out the salmon. Avoid freezing cooked salmon to maintain its texture.
