Step 1

Start by making the barbecue sauce: mix together the brown sugar, beer, mustard, and vinegar in a small saucepan. Bring it to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 15 to 17 minutes, stirring now and then, until the sauce thickens and reduces to about half a cup.

02

Step 2

Next, shape the ground beef into four patties, each about half an inch thick. Grill them over medium heat—if you’re using charcoal, cook them on the grill grate over ash-covered coals; if you have a gas grill, keep it covered and set to medium. Cook the burgers for around 8 to 10 minutes, turning occasionally, until they reach 160°F in the center.

03

Step 3

A couple of minutes before the burgers are done, pop the buns cut-side down on the grill to toast them lightly.

04

Step 4

To assemble, spread a tablespoon of the barbecue sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Place a burger on top, then pile on the cabbage. Spoon the remaining sauce over the cabbage and close the sandwiches. Enjoy!

Cook's tip

- Use fresh ground beef with about 20% fat for juicy patties.
- Avoid pressing down on the burgers while cooking to keep them moist.
- Let the burgers rest for a few minutes after cooking to lock in the juices.

Why you’ll love it

These burgers combine smoky barbecue flavors with a tangy, vinegar-based sauce that adds a unique twist. They are juicy, flavorful, and perfect for a casual meal or a backyard gathering. The balance of sweet, spicy, and savory makes every bite exciting.

Serving ideas

Serve the burgers on toasted buns with classic toppings like sliced onions, pickles, and coleslaw. Add a side of crispy fries or baked beans to complete the meal. A cold drink, like iced tea or lemonade, pairs perfectly with these flavors.

Storage & leftovers

Store leftover burgers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently in a skillet or microwave to avoid drying them out. You can also freeze cooked patties for longer storage; thaw before reheating.
